Gloria de Piero strikes Gold thanks to Bradford College

Two awards in association with Bradford College
Bradford College celebrates as Gloria de Piero MP, Shadow Minister for Women and one of its former students, was awarded a prestigious Association of Colleges (AoC) Gold Award by Lord Willis of Knaresborough at the House of Commons.

Staff and students from Bradford College were present at the awards ceremony on June 11, which is held each year to celebrate the success of further education alumni as well as acknowledge the vital role that colleges play.

Gloria was nominated by the College where she studied A Levels in Psychology and Sociology between 1991 and 1993.

In 2010  she was selected as Labour’s candidate for the Ashfield constituency. Gloria has kept in touch with Bradford College and sees it as the ‘launch pad’ for her subsequent career. The college named her as one of it 175 Heroes in their 2008 flagship alumni exhibition.

On winning her award Gloria de Piero said,

“I’m really flattered to get a further education award because the way Bradford College does education is pretty special.”

To highlight the important role further education continues to play for today’s students, a ‘future star’ campaign is run alongside the Gold Awards. The nominating colleges each select a current student who shows promise in a similar field to their Gold Award winner.

Jessica Ing, (21) a student at Bradford College, was selected as the Future Star, and was awarded a £1,000 grant to help further her career aspirations. She also had the opportunity to meet her muse at the award ceremony at the House of Commons.

Jessica said, “I am inspired by Gloria’s student union activity when she was at college and how she used her time as an FE student to develop the skills, understanding and confidence to pursue a successful media and political career. I want to be like her and ask questions, show findings and have a voice to help people.”
